Prior to application, students who lack a baccalaureate degree in speech-language pathology must complete 19 specified hours of undergraduate coursework in speech-language pathology. The list below outlines the courses required to be completed prior to admission to the Graduate Program in Speech Pathology, and the quarters in which  these are taught on our campus:

One other course which is required but may have already been completed during the applying student’s first BA/BS degree curriculum include a course in Statistics. At Louisiana Tech University, if the applicant cannot show evidence on an official transcript of completion of this course, he/she will be required to enroll in STAT 200, Statistics (taught every quarter) during the first year of the program.

SPCH 500:  Introduction to Research

0-3-3.  A course designed to introduce students to research applicable to speech and theories of measurement including statistical and behavioral designs, reliability and judgments.

SPCH 501:  Seminar
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3  (9).  Preq., Permission of Instructor.  Individual problems and research in any of the following general areas of concentration: speech communication, speech-language pathology, speech and hearing science, audiology, theatre arts.

SPCH 503: Introduction to MS Excel and Statistics:
1 Hours Credit
0-1-1 (1). Preq., permission of instructor. standing and applying descriptive statistics, p-values, significance, correlation, etc. as these topics apply to research in the field.  Use of computer-based statistic programs.

SPCH 506: Language Disorders in Children: Birth – 5
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3. Preq., Permission of Instructor. Nature, etiology, assessment and management of communicative/social interactions in children birth to 5; emphasis on team approaches, culturally/linguistically diverse backgrounds, theoretical, evidence-based, and practical applications.

SPCH 507:  Dysphagia
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3.  A study of the etiology, symptomatology, and anatomic/behavioral characteristics of dysphagia with an emphasis on principles and methods of diagnosis and treatment.

SPCH 508:  Practicum in Communicative Disorders
1 to 3 Hours Credit
1-3 hour(s) credit (18).  Supervised clinical experience with individuals who have disorders of communication.

Speech 511:  Language Disorders in Children: School Aged.
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3 hour(s) credit. Preq., Permission of Instructor. Etiologies, characteristics, assessment, and intervention for language learning disabilities common in school-aged children, with emphasis on academic and cognitive aspects of language in classroom contexts.

SPCH 513:  Articulation Disorders
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3.  Preq., Permission of Instructor.  Study of current research in testing, prediction, and management procedures for articulation disorders.

SPCH 514:  Assistive Technology/Augmentative Communication for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists
1 to 3 Hours Credit
1-3 hours credit (6).  Preq., Permission of Department Head.  An overview of assistive technology and augmentative communication devices, techniques for assessment and implementation, and funding issues.  May be repeated for up to 6 semester hours credit.

SPCH 519:  Profession Issues in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology
NC Hour Credit
NC.  Preq., Permission of Department Head.  Issues and professional responsibilities related to the professional practice of speech-language pathology and audiology.  Three quarters of enrollment required of all graduate students in SLP/A in the first year of study; may be taken for three additional quarters of enrollment with permission of Department Head.

SPCH 522:  Clinical Methods for Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

1-3 hours credit (6).  Preq., Permission of Department Head.  Methods of clinical practice for speech-language pathology and audiology.  May be repeated for up to 6 semester hours credit.

SPCH 523:  Adult Language Disorders
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3.  Preq., Permission of Instructor.  A study of acquired language disorders associated with brain damage in adults with an emphasis on symptomatology, assessment, and diagnosis.

SPCH 527:  Advanced Diagnostic Procedures
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3.  A study of formal and informal assessment procedures applicable to speech/language disorders.  Emphasis on the role of differential diagnosis, specialized test procedures, and referral procedures.

SPCH 528:  Motor Speech Disorders
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3.  Preq., Permission of Instructor.  A study of motor speech disorders that result form damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems, their etiologies, symptomatology, diagnoses, and management.

SPCH 529:  Management of Adult Language Disorders

SPCH 530:  Special Problems in Communicative Disorders

SPCH 550:  Research Proposal
1 Hour Credit
1 Hour credit.  Preq., Permission of Thesis Director.  The student interacts with the Thesis Director to develop a research objective for the thesis.

SPCH 555:  Externship in Speech-Language Pathology
1 to 4 Hours Credit
1-4 hour(s) credit (14). Preq., Permission of Department of Head.  Supervised clinical practicum in an off-campus university-affiliated hospital private practice, or other.  May be repeated for a maximum of 14 hours credit.  

SPCH  556:  Aural Rehabilitation

0-3-3.  Rehabilitative procedures for hearing impaired children and adults including speech and language, psychosocial and educational deficits and management.

SPCH 561:  Speech and Voice Science

Study of the physiologic and acoustic aspects of speech and voice including the use of instrumentation and management of speech and voice disorders.

Speech 562:  Seminar in Special Populations in Communication Disorders
0-3-3 Hour(s) Credit
Preq., Permission of Instructor. A study of the identification and management of common speech, language, and hearing disorders with emphasis on fluency, craniofacial anomalies, autism and hearing disorders.

SPCH 565: Comprehensive Examination in Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology
2 Hours Credit
2 hours credit.  Preq., Permission of Comprehensive Examination Committee chair.  Registration required in the quarter in which the comprehensive examination is to be taken.  successful completion of the written is a prerequisite to the oral comprehensive exam. 

SPCH 570:  Language and Speech Development
3 Hours Credit
0-3-3.  Study of the normal acquisition and maintenance of speech and language;  theoretical formulations about speech and language behavior, and approaches to its study.

SPCH 589:  Directed Research in Audiology or Speech-Language Pathology

1-3 hour(s) credit (6).  Preq., Permission of Faculty Member(s) Involved of Thesis Director.  Students pursue individual research projects; enrollment for three hours credit required for development and presentation of thesis prospectus to the Thesis Committee.
