Rhodes Scholars must meet four standards:

• literary and scholastic attainments;
• energy to use one’s talents to the full, as exemplified by fondness for and success in sports;
• truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship;
• moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.

Underlying these standards is the aim that Scholars be physically, intellectually, and morally capable of leadership. Scholars are expected to play an influential part in the betterment of society, wherever their careers might lead them.

The US-Ireland Alliance sponsors a competitive, national scholarship for graduate study by American citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 at institutions of higher learning on the island of Ireland. Named to honor the former U.S. Senator’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, the George J. Mitchell Scholarships are intended to familiarize and connect the next generation of American leadership with the island of Ireland.

These Scholarships support one year of graduate study in any discipline offered at an institution of higher learning in Ireland or Northern Ireland. Scholars must be enrolled in a degree or certificate program offered at the institution. The Mitchell Scholarship provides tuition, housing, a living expenses stipend, and international travel. Normally, 12 Scholarships are awarded each year. Mitchell Scholars must exhibit superior levels of academic achievement, leadership, and community service.

Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to study for a graduate degree in the United Kingdom. Up to 40 Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at a UK institution in any field of study.

As future leaders with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American people, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent, and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their engagement with Britain through its best academic programs contributes to their success.

Thanks to generous donations from alumni and families, the English Department offers five scholarships for English majors at various levels of study.  Scholarship application forms are available in the School of Literature and Language office in G. T. Madison Hall, Room 236 and by email msroach@latech.edu.  The criteria and due dates for each are provided below:

Dorothy Melton Scholarship in English

The Melton scholarship shall be awarded to one or two students per academic year in the range of $350-$1,050 and distributed on a quarterly basis (Fall/Winter/Spring).

Criteria:

• The recipient must be a junior, senior, or graduate student majoring in English
• The recipient must maintain a 3.2 GPA
• The recipient must remain a full-time student while holding the scholarship

Application Deadline:  May 1
Award Decision:  September 1

To apply, complete the scholarship form, and a personal statement (2-4 paragraphs, 250-500 words).

Clairece Harp Lyles Endowed Scholarship

The Lyles Endowed scholarship shall be awarded to one or two students per academic year up to  $750 and distributed on a quarterly basis (Fall/Winter/Spring).

Criteria:

• The recipient must be a continuing freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior English major
• The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA
• The recipient must remain a full-time student while holding the scholarship

Application Deadline:  May 1

Award Decision: September 1

To apply, complete the scholarship form, and a personal statement (250-500 words).

The Zack and Cynthia Blanchard Scholarship for Studies in English

This scholarship will award approximately $800 for the academic year. Be sure to put the scholarship name on the form. Students may apply for more than one scholarship if eligible.

Criteria:

• The recipient must be an undergraduate or graduate student majoring in English
• The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA
• The recipient must remain a full-time student while holding the scholarship (8 hours minimum for undergraduates; 6 hours minimum for graduates)
• Student must demonstrate financial need for the scholarship

Anna Prothro Creative Writing Scholarship

The Anna Prothro Creative Writing Scholarship ($4000) will be awarded for one student per academic year and is distributed on a quarterly basis (Fall/Winter/Spring).  The recipient must be a continuing freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior English major with a creative writing concentration or interest.

Criteria:

• The recipient must show promise in a genre of creative writing and have a goal of becoming a recognized Southern author
• The recipient must maintain a 3.5 GPA
• The recipient must remain a full-time student during the time the scholarship is held.

Application Deadline:  May

Award Decision: September 1

To apply, complete the English scholarship form, write a personal statement (2-4 paragraphs of 250-500 words) describing your creative writing experience and goals, and provide a writing sample (5-25 pages of poetry, fiction, drama, and/or creative non-fiction) from the last two years.

Mary Alice Posey Garrett English Scholarship

The Mary Alice Posey Garrett English Scholarship will award one or more students per academic year $400-$1,000 for study abroad.

Criteria:

• The recipient must be a transfer student, continuing freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior English major, or a graduate student in English.
• The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA at the end of the academic year
• The recipient should show promise of classroom teacher of English
• The recipient must remain a full-time student during the time they hold the scholarship

  Qualifications – 3.0 GPA and adhere to requirements set by the debate team

Actors auditioning for the graduate program, scholarships, or graduate assistantships should provide a headshot, resume, and prepare two contrasting monologues. Each monologue should be approximately 60 seconds long. Musical Theatre students who would like to sing may substitute 16 bars of a song in place of the second monologue. Auditionees should bring recorded accompaniment on a laptop, tablet, phone, or mp3 players.

Designers, managers, administrators, and directors interviewing for the graduate program, scholarships, or graduate assistantships should provide a resume, headshots, and portfolio of your work. The portfolio can be hard-copy or electronic.

There are a number of scholarships available to aviation students. Because of the frequent changes in the scholarship offerings, it is best to check with the Professional Aviation office regarding the current availability.
