Susan GoodwinThe Department of Music is proud of its alumni, from the earliest to the most recent. Their many accomplishments are a result of the strong foundation they built while at Louisiana Tech University.

In 1898, four years after the founding of what was then Louisiana Industrial Institute, the first music degrees were awarded to Bertie Estelle Goodwin (pictured) and Pearl Blanche Sherwood. These early graduates established a tradition of excellence that has only grown stronger with time.

Alumnus of the Year

(2016-2017) Tony Boutté

Tony Boutté

Tenor Tony Boutté has established himself as a first-rate singer of many styles, including opera, art song, oratorio, and chamber music from the Baroque period to today. Performing regularly in the United States and Europe, his biggest success to date was the world premier production of Arjuna’s Dilemma (Douglas J. Cuomo) produced at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Opera News praised his work saying “His performance was so pure and emotional, his tenor so exciting…” The New York Times agreed, stating that he gave “a vulnerable and anguished performance.” Other critical praise has come for his performances of works by Haydn (“Boutté …sang with bel canto flexibility and sweetness”—Opera News), Handel (“…fluent and flexible in line”—LA Times), Britten (“Boutté’s upper register gleamed”—Miami Herald) and as the title character in the world premier of Michael Dellaira’s The Death of Webern (“His fine tenor was both powerful and dulcetly colored... he was a paragon of verbal clarity.”—Miami Herald). Tony joined the music faculty at Sam Houston State University as an Associate Professor of Voice in Fall 2016. Learn more about his many accomplishments at http://www.tonyboutte.com
