2017 Vocal Audition Dates

Prepare and perform one vocal selection that best demonstrates your vocal range, quality and musicality. Traditional selections would include art songs, folk songs, and arias. Do not use choir music or lead sheets for your audition. An accompanist will be provided. Sight reading will be included as part of the audition.

Guitar

We recognize that pre-college guitar training is varied and somewhat inconsistent. We also recognize that the average guitar major accepted at Louisiana Tech University may never have studied classical guitar before. The following information, therefore, is offered as a guideline for your preparation.

We require three pieces to be played for your audition. They should include one technical study showing your ability to play arpeggios and two pieces from contrasting musical periods. The following are pieces commonly played at auditions. All but the technical work, should be played from memory:

These pieces are merely suggestions. We urge you to show this list to your teacher and, based on these suggestions, he/she will be able to suggest appropriate pieces you may currently be studying.

Piano

Solo: Students should play two memorized pieces from two different eras: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or 20th Century.

Suggested Repertory Examples Include:

Scales: Students will be asked to choose and play a major scale, minor scale and arpeggios in the same key as the chosen scales in four octaves, hands together.

Sight Reading: Students will also be asked to sight read at least one intermediate level piece.

Orchestral Strings

Prepare scales and arpeggios and three selections of contrasting styles and periods as follows:

At least one of the selections should be performed from memory. Sight-reading may be required. Applicants may bring their own pianist or audition without accompaniment.

  Trumpet

Solo: Perform two works of contrasting style and tempo. These can be etudes or solo repertoire. All-State or District Honor Band materials are acceptable. Solo selections can be performed with piano accompaniment or without.

Suggested Solo Repertoire:

Scales: All major scales. A scale sheet may be used, but additional points are awarded for memorization. If within your range, perform 2 octave scales. Chromatic Scale: from low F# to C above the staff.

Sight Reading: A brief sight reading exercise will be included in the audition.

Horn

Solo: Perform two works of contrasting style and tempo. These can be etudes or solo repertoire. All-State or District Honor Band materials are acceptable. Solo selections can be performed with piano accompaniment or without.

Suggested Solo Repertoire:

Scales: All major scales. A scale sheet may be used, but additional points are awarded for memorization. All scales played 2 octaves. Chromatic Scale: 2 octaves beginning on g below the staff to the g on the top of the staff.

Sight Reading: A brief sight reading exercise will be included in the audition.

Trombone

Solo: Perform two works of contrasting style and tempo. These can be etudes or solo repertoire. All-State or District Honor Band materials are acceptable. Solo selections can be performed with piano accompaniment or without.

Suggested Solo Repertoire:

Scales: All major scales. A scale sheet may be used, but additional points are awarded for memorization. If within your range, perform 2 octave scales. Chromatic Scale: from low E to Bb above the staff.

Euphonium

Solo: Perform two works of contrasting style and tempo. These can be etudes or solo repertoire. All-State or District Honor Band materials are acceptable. Solo selections can be performed with piano accompaniment or without. 

Suggested Solo Repertoire:

Scales: All major scales. A scale sheet may be used, but additional points are awarded for memorization. If within your range, perform 2 octave scales. Chromatic Scale: from low E to Bb above the staff.

Tuba

Solo: Perform two works of contrasting style and tempo. These can be etudes or solo repertoire. All-State or District Honor Band materials are acceptable. Solo selections can be performed with piano accompaniment or without.

Scales: All major scales. A scale sheet may be used, but additional points are awarded for memorization. If within your range, perform 2 octave scales. Chromatic Scale: from low E to Bb on top of the staff.

Non-Music Major Band
