Members of the Louisiana Tech community are invited to attend the upcoming Faculty Concert series performance, featuring Dr. Cain Budds, an associate professor of music, on guitar; Dr. Gregory Lyons, an assistant professor of music, on marimba; and Karl Puljak, director of School of Architecture and the School of Art, on cello. The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 1 in the School of Art gallery. Budds said the first half will be the solo guitar featuring the keyboard works of Domenico Scarlatti arranged for guitar and the music of Leo Brouwer. “Brouwer is considered to be perhaps the most important composer for guitar of the 20th century,” Budds said. “I will play Brouwer’s beautiful ‘El Decameron Negro’ — images of Afro-Cuban folklore. The second half will feature myself and Karl Puljak playing the cello. We will premiere ‘Black Bear Romp’ from ‘Bayou Sketches’ for guitar and cello by Louisiana Tech’s Dr. Joe L. Alexander. We then will continue with ‘Quatre pièces intimes’ by Dusan Bogdanovic. In addition Karl and I will perform ‘Sonata’ by Radames Gnattali. Finally, I will perform ‘Triple Axis’ by Mark Francis with Dr. Gregory Lyons.” Some of the works are composed by members of Tech faculty, Budds added. “The solo guitar works are some of my favorites that I have never performed, so I am really happy to play them now,” he said. “Dr. Alexander’s work is one that I asked him to compose for us — so it is brand new. The piece by Mark Francis was performed by Dr. Lyons and myself for the National Association of Composers USA National Festival in 2013 that was hosted here at Tech in October by Dr. Alexander. We liked the piece very much so we will share it again on this occasion.” The event is free and open to the public. For more information contact Budds at 318-257-3655.
