Music Facilities

The Louisiana Tech University School of Music is housed in two primary locations: the historic Howard Center for the Performing Arts and the Band Building.

Howard Center for the Performing Arts (HCPA)

Located on the southernmost point of Louisiana Tech University’s historic Quadrangle is Howard Center for the Performing Arts. Within Howard Center, visitors can find administrative and classroom spaces for both the School of Music and the School of Theatre, as well as a number of performing venues, faculty studios, and various teaching and learning spaces. Located nearest the clock tower and Centennial Plaza, the west wing of Howard Center is home to the School of Music.

School of Music Office – HCPA 224

This is the central office where the daily business of the School of Music in conducted and serves as the first point of contact for current and future students. You can reach the School of Music Office by calling 318.257.5473 during regular business hours or by emailing music@latech.edu.

Recital Hall – HCPA 215

This 60-seat recital hall serves as one of the primary performance spaces for the School of Music and doubles as a “smart” classroom for lectures, masterclasses, and music courses.

Howard Auditorium

Howard Auditorium is an iconic 1150-seat performance venue used for music ensemble concerts, LTCA  events, and musical productions. Many important university-wide and civic events are also held in this space.

Student lounge – HCPA 223

Music students enjoy this dedicated space for relaxing, meeting other students, and having fun. A drink vending machine and mailboxes for student organizations are located here.

Classrooms

Most lecture-based music courses are taught in two “smart classrooms” in Howard Center – Rooms 222 and 332.

Choir room

Located in the basement of Howard Center, the Choir Room features arrange-able stadium seating and a Yamaha G3R baby grand piano.

Recording Studio – HCPA 314

Opening in Spring 2020, the School of Music Recording Studio is a hands-on classroom and studio space, and is the primary teaching space for audio production courses. The focal point of the control room is a 32-channel SSL Origin console – Louisiana Tech is among the first universities in the country to own this state-of-the-art studio mixing console.The studio’s computers are equipped with industry standard audio production software, such as ProTools, Logic, and Reason.

The studio is open to all students who have completed MIND 310 – Audio Engineering.

Music Technology Lab – HCPA 306

Open to all current music students, the Music Technology Lab contains nine workstations comprised of Mac computers loaded with various music-related software such as Finale, GarageBand, Audacity, etc. and MIDI controllers. A printing station, available for use by all university students, is located at the intersection of the third floor hallways. 

Piano Lab – HCPA 300

On the third floor of the Theatre Wing of Howard Center is the piano lab. Within this space, group piano classes are taught on 14 Yamaha Clavinova electric pianos.

General Practice Rooms

Practice rooms are located on the second (Ground) and third floors of the Music Wing of Howard Center. With the exception of HCPA 328, these practice rooms are reserved for use only by students currently enrolled in private lessons. 

Piano Practice Room – HCPA 326

This room is home to a new Yamaha C1X  baby grand piano and is reserved for use by piano majors and a limited number of students registered for minor lessons. Access to this room is controlled by the piano faculty. 

Public Practice Room – HCPA 328

This room includes an upright piano and is open for use by any student currently enrolled at Louisiana Tech on a first-come, first-served basis. 

Band Building

Nestled between Woodard Hall and the prestigious A.E. Phillips Lab School is Tech’s other music facility: the Band Building. Home to the Band Office, this building houses two large rehearsal rooms, along with additional practice rooms and the applied studios for single reeds, low brass, and percussion.

Band Office – BB 101

The Band Office supports a number of instrumental ensembles and the faculty whose studios are located in the Band Building. 

Large Rehearsal Hall – BB 109

This room serves as the primary rehearsal space for the Band of Pride, the Symphonic Band, and other large instrumental ensembles. 

Small Rehearsal Hall – BB 108

This room functions both as a rehearsal space for our Jazz Ensembles and other small ensembles, and as a classroom for a number of music courses. 

Practice Rooms

The Band Building is also home to several practice rooms of various sizes, including a dedicated percussion practice room and rooms for small ensemble rehearsals.

Visitors are always welcome at Louisiana Tech and may use any available parking area zone except where the curb is painted red or reserved.
