Louisiana Tech’s observance of Women’s History Month continues on Wednesday, March 24, with a lecture by Dr. Nikki Brown, assistant professor of history at the University of New Orleans. Brown will speak at 10:15 a.m. in Wyly Tower Auditorium. Her topic will be “African American Women, Marriage and Respectability.”’ The event is free and open to the public. Brown is a graduate of Oberlin College and she received her Ph.D. in history at Yale University. Prior to her employment at UNO, she also taught at Kent State University and at Grambling State University, where she served as head of the department of history. A specialist in women’s history and African American history, Brown is the author of Private Politics and Public Voices: African American Women’s Activism from World War I to the New Deal, which received the 2007 Letitia Woods Brown Memorial Book Prize for the best book in African American women’s history. She is also co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Jim Crow. Women’s History Month events at Louisiana Tech during March are sponsored by the department of history and Lambda-Rho Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, History Honor Society. Coordinator of the series is Dr. Laurie S. Stoff, an assistant professor of history.
