Louisiana Tech’s student-run newspaper, The Tech Talk, along with its staff, received multiple accolades from the Southeast Journalism Conference, held recently at the University of Tennessee-Martin. SEJC, an eight-state regional group, provides two opportunities to enter competition: the Best of the South Competition, where students and school publications submit work prior to the competition, and the on-site competition, which took place in Martin, Tenn. In the Best of the South categories, The Tech Talk ranked 6th in Best Student Newspaper, and members of its staff received the following awards:
  • Dacia Idom, a senior photography major, 2nd place, Best Multimedia Journalist; and
  • Kelly Belton, a senior journalism major, 3rd place, Best Newspaper Layout Designer;
  • Amie Rolland, a senior journalism major, 3rd place, Best College Audio News, for her work with Shreveport’s KDAQ 89.9.
  • Jessica Wethington, a 2011 graduate, 5th place, Best Press Photographer;
In the on-site competition, the staff garnered two awards. Mary Timmons, a senior journalism major, received third place in public relations, and Rebecca Spence, a senior journalism and speech major, received third place for layout and design. “We are proud to again be included in the exclusive Top 10 of SEJC’s Best of the South and in SEJC’s on-site competition,” said Dr. Reginald Owens, chair of the journalism department. “This proves that our students are among the top student journalists in the nation. We compete against the best and win with the best. Owens added that the students with faculty guidance work together to produce an award-winning newspaper. “The honors our students have earned are the result of lot of hard work and the support of a dedicated faculty,” he said. “Our students continue to wave our banner high with their good work.”
