Tech choirs to commemorate Civil War anniversary
The Louisiana Tech choirs will perform their Winter Choral Concert, “We Remember,” beginning at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 19 in Howard Auditorium. The choirs, which include the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, will perform music that will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. “We are honoring veterans and members of the community who have served our country,” said Dr. Sean Teets, director of choral activities. “We are doing pieces that celebrate America and we are also remembering the history of the Civil War. The battle of Gettysburg was 150 years ago this coming July.” Dr. Laura Thompson, an associate professor of music, and Dr. Robert Ferrington, a previous director of choral activities at Tech, will serve as guest conductors. Dr. V. Elaine Thompson, an assistant professor of history, will give a lecture about the significance of the Civil War during the program as well. “I am hoping the audience comes away more educated about the Civil War, and I hope they take great pride in hearing patriotic songs about this great country we live in,” Teets said. “Last year we had a guest lecture on the history of the King James Bible and it was very successful. Dr. Thompson will speak three different times during our concert. She will explain the history of the songs we are singing and background of events that took place during the Civil War.” For more information, contact Teets at 318-257-5272 or at firstname.lastname@example.org. The event is free and open to the public.
