Theatre Department raises curtain on season with “Laundry and Bourbon” and “Lone Star”
“Laundry and Bourbon” and “Lone Star,” a double-bill program by James McLure and directed by Cherrie Sciro, Lallage Wall Endowed Professor and coordinator of theatre at Louisiana Tech University, will open at 7:30 p.m. October 29 in Stone Theatre located in the Howard Center for the Performing Arts on the Louisiana Tech campus.
The full run of performances is set for October 29 – November 1 and November 5 – 8. Curtain is at 7:30 p.m. each night with the exception of the November 1 performance, which, due to Louisiana Tech’s Homecoming events, has yet to be announced. In celebration of Halloween, Stone Theatre is hosting an audience costume contest wherein the best dressed male and best dressed female attendee will each receive a special prize.
“Laundry and Bourbon” takes place on the front porch of Roy and Elizabeth’s home in Maynard, Texas, on a hot summer afternoon. Elizabeth and her friend Hattie are whiling away the time folding laundry, watching TV, sipping bourbon and Coke, and gossiping about the many open secrets which are so much a part of small-town life. They are joined by the self-righteous Amy Lee who, among other tidbits, can’t resist blurting out that Roy has been seen around town with another woman.
A companion to “Laundry and Bourbon,” “Lone Star” is set in the cluttered backyard of a small-town Texas bar and conveys the men’s side of the story. Roy, a brawny, macho type who had once been a local high-school hero, is back in town after a hitch in Vietnam and trying to reestablish his position in the community. Joined by his younger brother, Ray (who worships him), Roy sets about consuming a case of beer while regaling Ray with tales of his military and amorous exploits.
“Laundry and Bourbon” and “Lone Star” tell the two sides of small-town life. Both works bring the characters face-to-face with the conflicts they have been avoiding, but McLure’s style allows for the plays to remain witty, comedic pieces. Please note that some adult language and content is present in these performances.
Tickets are $20 for general admission, $10 for students with a valid ID, $15 for youth under 14 years old and $15 for seniors 65 years old and up. For group rates, please contact the box office, located in the lobby of Howard Auditorium, at (318) 257-3942 between 1:30 p.m. and 4:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.
