Dr. Kenneth Robbins, director of Louisiana Tech’s School of Performing Arts, has recently had his essay, “The Healing Power of Butoh,” published in the book “Performing Consciousness.” “Butoh” means “dance” in Japanese, and, in his essay, Robbins discusses how Hikaru Otsubo, a dancer from Japan, performed at Tech two days after Sept. 11, 2001, and how Otsubo’s craft affected all who witnessed it on that day. In his essay, Robbins states how soothing and cathartic the butoh performance was to the community in attendance. Robbins’ essay is Chapter Seven in “Performing Consciousness,” edited by Per Brask and Daniel Meyer-Dinkgrafe and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in the U.K.
